Following a triumphant resurgence this year after a near-silent 2025, Egyptian rapper Yonyo is ready to switch gears on his new single, “Beny w Benak,” drifting away from his hard-earned, hard-hitting rap and straight-up trap bravado, and steering into softer, melodic romantic balladry.
His debut EP, ‘Bt3ml kol da leh?’, released earlier this year, cemented his reputation as one of the sharpest and rawest voices in Egyptian rap’s new wave, delivering verses that nailed tongue-in-cheek spoken word and fighting-ring aggressive bars alike, loaded with crafty internal rhymes and head-turning punchlines like his ballsy: “I would have said much more / if it wasn’t for censorship and the syndicate,” on “Esmo Eh?”.
“Beny w Benak,” the lead single from his upcoming EP, promises something different – a pop-leaning, wide-eyed romantic affair, delivered with more vulnerability and less bruiser energy.
The track is carried by smooth vocals with their rough edges softened, while the production pulls from several directions at once: flamenco-inspired guitar and percussion, synths that recall the golden era of 90s Egyptian Al Jeel pop, and soft piano lines that anchor the track emotionally.
Lyrically, ‘Beny w Benak’ toys with the idea – or rather the feeling – that some people are simply meant to find their way back to each other. It is a romantic, open-hearted release that proves Yonyo can do more than rap – and do it convincingly.
