Producer Molly Conners first made a lasting impression on me at a charity event last fall, where her engaging personality and dry wit stood out. Fast forward six months, and we sat down to chat about movies and the business of making them. Her journey started from being a successful political consultant, and that eventually led her to become a successful Hollywood Producer.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Molly attributes her success and sunny outlook on life to her unwavering drive. After growing up in Boca Raton, Florida, and graduating from George Washington University, she began her political career at just 16. “I interned on Capitol Hill, it was the ‘90s, that summer was filled with enough anecdotes for a comedy of its own,” she quips.
Transition to Hollywood
Her transition to Hollywood began with producing political commercials, including her father’s. “Something clicked,” she recalls. A friend nudged her toward short films, and one thing led to another—before long, Molly was navigating the complex world of feature films. She found the movie-making process utterly fascinating.
Favorite Films and Influences
In high school, she was awestruck by Silence of the Lambs, calling it a masterpiece. Ironically, she often teased her friend, a film major in college, asking, “What on earth will you do with that?” Her favorite films, listed without hesitation, are Moonstruck, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and, of course, Silence of the Lambs.
Achievements and Contributions
Molly’s achievements speak volumes. As the founder and CEO of Phiphen, an independent film, and media company, she has produced and executive-produced a remarkable array of films, including Butcher’s Crossing, Coup! The Immigrant, and the Oscar-winning Birdman, where she played a key role as an executive producer. Molly was also nominated for an Emmy for her work on the TV show It’s Bruno.
Accolades and New Ventures
In addition to her productions contributing to four Academy Awards and eleven nominations, she co-founded Phiphen Studios, located in Englewood Cliffs, a post-production house that enhances the filmmaking process. Molly remains dedicated to creating compelling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide. Additionally, she oversees Phiphen Games, a video game publishing arm that highlights her versatility in the entertainment industry.
Currently, Molly is in Europe, shooting her next feature film. It’s clear she is not slowing down anytime soon—after all, in Molly Conners’ world, the show must go on, and who knows? One day her early career experiences will inspire the next big comedy hit.
